From Snapshot to Master Image

How do you go from a quick grab shot on the street to a portfolio quality image?

Have a look at this 20 minute video tutorial showing how Michael Reichmann (of the Luminous landscape website) edits what starts off as a rather ordinary snapshot through a series of adjustments to produce a master quality image.

The starting image is what many of us might have captured. But watch the various steps involved where different crops and versions of this image are appraised and then further adjusted.

At almost each step, the improvements seem slight, yet the overall impact of the finished version is considerably different to the original.

It is this attention to detail, this pursuit of improved image quality, that often separates the ordinary from the special.

If we take an honest look at our own work,  we can learn important lessons from this, especially for those who aspire to produce competition standard images.
