In an ambitious project on 1 June, the last day before the Jubilee weekend, students at Ponteland Middle School in Callerton Lane formed a human Union Flag as part of their Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The children were asked to come to school that day in red, white or blue tops and one of the teachers had the immense task of arranging them into the flag pattern.
I was delighted to be invited by the Headteacher to board the cherry-picker to capture the event and I must say I’m pleased with the result. Fortunately I had taken my little Panasonic Lumix TZ20 as it just gave an angle wide enough to include everyone with the lifter at maximum height [my Olympus E-420 at 17.5mm lost the corners].
I subsequently applied Gary’s technique of a gaussian blur effect to give the image a slightly richer texture. After the customary crop and a minimal amount of perspective distortion I ended up with the image shown here.
A copy is displayed on the PPS stand in the Memorial Hall exhibition which runs until Tuesday 5 June. Mike
